Click any flame, or press i, to open its traits panel. This is everything that can appear there. The How it works page explains the ideas behind them.
The tier comes from the flame's luck: closeness to its block's sweet spot plus how far its block hash beat the difficulty target, and nothing else: the sat and block height change the look but never the tier, because both can be bought or aimed for. The panel shows luck × 10 as Score. Chances are for mainnet.
| Tier | Luck needed | Score | Chance | What it adds to the look |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | below 2.02 | 0–20 | 60% | Base glow |
| Uncommon | 2.02 | 20+ | 25% | More glow, 15% denser sampling |
| Rare | 3.37 | 34+ | 10% | Brighter glow, 30% denser |
| Epic | 4.74 | 47+ | 4% | A fisheye "lens" transform over the whole flame, 45% denser |
| Legendary | 6.64 | 66+ | 1% | Palette cycling, strongest glow, 60% denser |
"Luck needed" is the minimum for that tier. The cut-offs are solved so that luck from placement alone gives exactly 60 / 25 / 10 / 4 / 1 percent.
Where the mint's transaction sits among the block's transactions (the coinbase is transaction 0).
| Trait | Values | How it's granted | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position | Genesis | First transaction after the coinbase | 1 per block |
| Vanguard | Top 1% of the block | 1% | |
| Early | Top 10% (after Vanguard) | 9% | |
| Mid-block | The middle 80% | 80% | |
| Late | Bottom 10% (before Rearguard) | 9% | |
| Rearguard | Bottom 1% | 1% | |
| Last Light | The block's last transaction | 1 per block | |
| Unknown | The block couldn't be read, so position (and its luck) is left out | — | |
| Tx Index | 238 of 348 | The transaction's index and the block's transaction count | — |
| Tempo | Largo 26 s · Andante 18 s · Allegro 12 s · Presto 7 s | How long one loop takes, by quarter of the block: first quarter Largo, last quarter Presto | 25% each |
| Sweet Spot | tx 1682 | A position picked from the block's own hash. It doesn't exist until the block is mined, so fee rate can't aim for it | — |
| Spot Distance | 248 tx or Bullseye | Transactions between the mint and the sweet spot, wrapping around the block's ends. The closer, the luckier: the closest 1% is a 1-in-100 placement | — |
| Bullseye | Yes | The mint is the transaction the sweet spot lands on | 1 per block |
| Odds | 1 in 340 | How unlikely the placement was: sweet-spot closeness and block hash together, the whole of the luck | — |
Position names don't change rarity; only the sweet spot does. That keeps fee rate, which roughly decides order in a block, from buying rarity. A mainnet block holds about 3,000–7,500 transactions, so "1 per block" is roughly 1 in 5,000.
| Trait | Values | How it's granted | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hash Zeros | 19 | Leading zeros in the block hash, shown for interest. Rarity uses the exact hash against the block's difficulty target instead | — |
| Luck | Lucky Hash | The hash is in the lowest 1/32 of the range its difficulty allows. Switches the palette to Neon | 1 in 32 blocks |
| Blessed Hash | The lowest 1/1,024 of the range. Neon palette | 1 in 1,024 blocks | |
| Palette | Block | Colours generated from the block hash: every block has its own | most |
| Neon | A Lucky or Blessed Hash: the same colours, more saturated | 1 in 32 | |
| Gold | Minted in a halving block | 1 in 210,000 blocks |
Special heights are named in the traits, and two change the look. They don't change the tier: anyone can time a mint into a chosen block, so a height can't be a shortcut to rarity. All mints in that block share it.
| Height trait | How it's granted | Look | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halving | Height divisible by 210,000 (the next is 1,050,000) | Gold palette | 1 in 210,000 |
| Hundred-K | Divisible by 100,000 | — | 1 in 100,000 |
| Ten-K | Divisible by 10,000 | — | 1 in 10,000 |
| Retarget | A difficulty-adjustment block: divisible by 2,016 | — | 1 in 2,016 |
| Kilo | Divisible by 1,000 | — | 1 in 1,000 |
| Palindrome | Reads the same backwards, like 974,479 | Adds a mirror | about 1 in 1,000 |
| Plain | None of the above | — | about 99.7% |
A height can earn more than one, shown together, such as "Halving + Ten-K". Only the largest of Hundred-K, Ten-K and Kilo is named, and a Halving isn't also named a Retarget.
The halving era the block is in, from 1. It sets the background tint behind the flame, cycling through seven:
| Epoch | Blocks | Background |
|---|
Every inscription sits on one satoshi, and ord rates sats by when they were mined. These aren't left to chance like the rest: a collector can choose to inscribe on a rare sat they hold, or buy one. So a sat changes the look and is named in the traits, but never changes the tier. Reading a sat's rarity needs an ord server with its sat index, which ordinals.com has.
| Sat | Which sats | Symmetry |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Almost all | From the seed |
| Uncommon | First sat of a block | 2-fold or more |
| Rare | First sat after a difficulty adjustment | 3-fold or more |
| Epic | First sat after a halving | 4-fold or more |
| Legendary | First sat of a halving cycle (cycles are 6 halvings) | 5-fold or more |
| Mythic | The very first sat, from the genesis block | 6-fold |
| Trait | How it's granted | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Sat Palindrome | The sat's number reads the same backwards (ord's "palindrome" charm) | Adds a mirror |
| Nineball | A sat mined in block 9 (ord's "nineball" charm) | Named in the traits |
| Trait | Values | How it's granted | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed | …i0 | The flame's own inscription ID. It fixes the genome: 3 to 5 transforms, each mixing one or two of 24 variations | — |
| Symmetry | Asymmetric | Chosen by the seed: no extra copies and no mirror | about 32% |
| Mirror | A mirror copy only | about 11% | |
| 2-fold, 3-fold, 4-fold | Rotated copies chosen by the seed (2-fold is the most common), or more from a rare sat, up to 6-fold | 2/7, 1/7, 1/7 of seeds | |
| Mirrored 3-fold … | Rotated copies plus a mirror. The seed gives a mirror a quarter of the time; a palindrome height or sat always adds one | — |
When a flame doesn't have its traits, the panel says why. Each of these plays in silver.
| State | When |
|---|---|
| Unrevealed | The mint hasn't confirmed yet, or the page can't reach an ordinals server. Its block decides the rest once it confirms |
| Unofficial (creator fee not paid) | The reveal transaction didn't pay the creator fee |
| Unofficial (minted before launch) | It confirmed in or before the launch block |
A chain's panel shows the flame on screen, with its own traits, plus:
| Trait | Values | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Chain | 2 of 5 | Which of the playing flames is on screen |
| Held | 3 of 5 links | How many of the chain's flames its current holder owns. Only those play |
| State | Dormant | The holder owns none of the chain's flames, so they play as silver shapes |
| Unofficial (creator fee not paid) | The chain didn't pay its chain fee, so it plays in silver |
